U10 boys show character and flair on Essex Finals Day

The under 10 boys graced the Olympic pitch for the final tournament of the season, producing some amazing comebacks and scoring some fantastic goals. Jack made his debut in defence and Rowan had a great first game in goal, allowing Milo to show his skills out on the pitch. The team showed real determination and played some brilliant hockey.

A slow start saw the team go 2-0 against Saffron Walden in the opening match, before Richard set up Payton to get a goal back. Then with time running out Sam and Richard played a lovely short corner routine and Sam swept in the equaliser.

Against Bishop's Stortford the boys again went a goal behind before Richard powered in a brilliant equaliser. A second goal from their opponents meant defeat was looming, but the team came back again and Kai set up Payton for another equaliser. Rowan made a brilliant late save to secure another 2-2 draw.

Chelmsford have been tough opponents throughout the season, but the team clicked into gear and Richard fired the ball across the box for Payton to score brilliantly for 1-0. Milo then won the ball on the edge of the box and slammed in a second, enjoying his freedom from the goalkeeping pads. The boys held off a late Chelmsford rally to secure a 2-1 win.

After an impromptu soaking from the sprinklers, the team fought hard but lost against a very strong Hertford team, who had clearly got lost on the way to their tournament. It's just not in Essex, Hertford. Then against Upminster the boys conceded early on and it looked as though the season would end with a defeat. But Payton had other ideas, controlling a bouncing cross from Sam on his chest before bundling home the equaliser and his third goal of the day.

Another great effort from a team that loves to do things the hard way and always has a great time on and off the pitch. Thank you to Rory for coaching, to Donna for organising and to Scott for umpiring. The team will be having their final games of the season at the regional finals next month.
