Mens 1s vs Wapping 2s

Let me set the scene: it was a balmy summers afternoon at Ashton playing fields with the might of the M1s set to take on neighbours Wapping in the final preseason game of the summer. With captain Aaron Phillips unavailable, young vice captain Christin Hall took the reins for what he hoped would be the first win of many.

Crostyx, eager to impose themselves on the game after a strong outing last week against Plashet, started strongly with Red (James Preston) stringing some nice passes together linking the play with Sam and Izzy in midfield. Unfortunately it was the Maroon men that took the lead. This shortly lead to a second goal which can only be described as unstoppable, straight into the top right corner, as good as it gets - but goalkeeper Robin should have done better.

However Crostyx grew back into the game. Chances were coming - with Sam and Jake Ling testing the keeper down the other end. A smart stop from the Wapping keeper saw him keep out an Alfie Tedder drag flick low to his right. Tim Richards’ quality shone throughout the game as it had done for so much of last year with his signature reverse picks down the left hand side.

Despite Wapping getting a third, Crostyx managed to get one back. Then a second! Could a comeback be on the cards…Crostyx mounted heavy pressure on the Wapping circle making the side two leagues above defend with all their worth.

However, it just wasn’t meant to be. Wapping scrapped to the end and squeezed across the line, winning 3-2. This is was a valiant display for the M1s and way to end pre Season. The 1s kick of their season at home to Richmond next week 4pm at Lee Valley
