Crostyx battle to come out victorious over unbeaten league table leaders.

In a thrilling hockey showdown that unfolded on November 4th, 2023, the Crostyx 3rd XI led by Captain McGinlay found themselves pitted against the formidable Tendering 1st XI, who were perched confidently atop the league standings.

This match delivered a roller-coaster of emotions, with the Crostyx 3rd XI staging a remarkable comeback from a 2-1 halftime deficit to secure a sensational 3-2 victory. This is even more impressive when 11 out of the 15 players were under 18, highlighting the great work of the clubs junior section. The initial half of the match was marked by intense competitiveness, with both teams showcasing their skill and unyielding determination. However, it was the Tendering 1st XI who struck first, taking the lead with an early goal. Crostyx countered brilliantly with a well-executed team play culminating in a goal by Matt Palmer. A disallowed goal for Pears heightened the atmosphere but just moments before halftime, Tendering found the back of the net again, placing Crostyx on the back foot. Trailing 2-1 at halftime, the Crostyx 3rd XI exhibited tremendous resilience during the break.

The team regrouped with the aid and guidance of coach Watson, and their unwavering resolve to stage a comeback was palpable. The second half witnessed an inspired Crostyx side mounting a remarkable resurgence. Matt Hyden, who delivered an outstanding performance, fired in a crucial goal from a short corner early in the half, levelling the score at 2-2. As the match hung in the balance, tension on the field was palpable. In the final ten minutes of the game, Hyden, once again rose to the occasion, slotting in the winning goal for Crostyx, eliciting jubilation among their supporters. The final whistle could not arrive soon enough, and even then, the anxiety continued as, with just 30 seconds left, a phenomenal defensive effort from the team, including a goal-line clearance by Pears, ensured that when the final whistle sounded, the score stood at 3-2 in favor of Crostyx. Hyden, with his game-winning goal and significant second-half contribution, rightfully earned the Player of the Match. His decisive performance in the game's pivotal moments made him the day's hero.

Although MOM can only be given to one-person, special mentions go to Adam Tsang, Oscar Leel and Sam Riley for some great defensive performances controlling the back line. The match exemplified the competitive spirit and unpredictability that make sports so captivating, keeping spectators and fans perched on the edge of their seats (or concrete steps at Ashtons). This result puts Crostyx 4th in the league after 7 games (4W, 3L) and only 3 points behind the leaders.
