With a late morning addition to the squad and then a very late drop out the 3's travelled to windy Camulodunum (Ed: Lofty has discovered Wikipedia See here) with just 10 men. Simon Gilbert, acting as skipper for the day , was still confident of a win as those 10 were as good as he would wish.
Thus, it turned out to be as the visitors started the game on the front foot and pressured the Garrison boys from the start . Lively passing exchanges in the midfield negated the oppo's superiority in numbers and with intelligent running from the front two there were gaps in the defence to exploit.
Quickly two up Crostyx , perhaps, relaxed just enough for Colchester to get something on the break. A controversial short corner was won and put away and it was decided to change the formation to negate their high runs. Leaving just 1 man up front did the trick and as Crostyx dominated the midfield more goals came leaving the half time score at 1-4.
The half time chat was mostly about conserving energy and keeping possession. The second half was the same going forward but tiredness began to take it's toll on our decision making and Colchester looked dangerous on the break and regularly began scoring but as we also scored at the other end the disparity in goal difference was maintained. Suffice to say we held out and it ended up 8-5 to the men in mauve in what was a very friendly and enjoyable game.
The goals were scored by Gibbon x 4 (dominate in midfield) , Channa (a great call up from the 4's) Mayo (apparently only awoke at 10:20 for a 10:30 meet) and Bond (the ever youthful). Many thanks to all those who played and help secure the 3 points. Team form; Tedder, Murphy, Gooch, Sandring, Gibbon, Gilbert, Lavender, Bond, Mayo and Channa.
